Skills Laboratory
The Skills Laboratory is one of the new benefits that is very useful for students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The general objective of having a skills lab is to provide students the necessary skills to recognize and manage patients in essential life saving emergency procedures.
The laboratory consists of state of the art equipment such as models, simulators and mannequins for the students to have hands on practice. Airway management, basic and advanced life support, endo-tracheal intubations, neonatal resuscitation, obstetric emergencies are examples of some of the emergency procedures students get to practice. Basic clinical skills such as recognizing cardiac sounds, murmurs, peripheral vein cannulation, central vein cannulation, and catheterization could also be practiced here.
Since these skills could be practiced in a non threatening environment, the learning ability of the students is promoted. This method enables all students to develop their clinical skills. The procedures could be repeated till the students have mastered them.
Skills training was incorporated into the modules of new curriculum that commenced in 2007. However, the students studying under the old curriculum also can be benefited by this laboratory.
