Department of Anatomy

Introduction

Anatomy forms the basis for the practice of medicine. It leads the physician towards an understanding of a patient’s disease whether by physical examination or using imaging techniques. It is also important in allied health programs where aspect of patient management that begins with an analysis of clinical signs are involved.
Knowledge and skills in the field of macroscopic and microscopic Anatomy will enable medical graduates to practice medicine successfully and scientists to pursue a carrier in the discipline of Anatomy or health sciences.

Services and Facilities

Dissecting Halls and Body Preservation Area

As the medical students learn Anatomy by dissecting human cadavers the department is well equipped with large dissecting halls, body preservation and body storing facilities. The department has two large modern dissecting halls - one in ground floor and the other in the first floor. Dead body embalming facilities including an automatic body embalming machine, cadaver storing tanks, body coolers and an electric body cutting band saw is available in the department. The department receives the dead bodies for dissections and prosected specimens entirely by a well established body donation scheme where the donors register in the department prior to their death and the body is donated to the department by their relatives after the death of the donors.

Histology Laboratory

The Histology Laboratory is equipped with 45 binocular microscopes, dissecting microscopes, stereo microscope, CCTV system and sound system. Also all the equipment needed for histology slide preparation including microtomes, tissue processor, electric ovens, water baths and stirrers are available in the histology laboratory. Histology slides for student histology practicals are prepared by the technicians in the histology laboratory.

Model Room

Anatomy model room has a collection of about 50 very expensive very carefully selected most important anatomy models. Also a collection of X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans are available for student learning in the model room.

Research Laboratory

A research laboratory equipped with basic molecular biology equipments is available for research work conducted by the academic and postgraduate students.

Anatomy Auditorium

The lectures for medical, human biology, nursing and pharmacy students are conducted in the Anatomy Auditorium. Anatomy Auditorium is a well equipped air conditioned auditorium with multimedia and CCTV facilities with a seating capacity of 450. In addition to Anatomy lectures it also provide space and facilities for other lectures conducted by other 15 departments and also most of the faculty functions such as guest lectures, academic sessions, student welcome functions are held in the Anatomy Auditorium.
