Deparment of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Introduction
Upon completion of the undergraduate training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, the student should acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes required for practice of Obstetrics & Gynaecology as an intern house officer & to be prepared for life long training as a doctor.

The University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is responsible for teaching Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal Paediatrics, to undergraduate medical students. Currently, each year approximately 150 medical students spend 8 weeks attached to the Department during the fifth year of their medical course.

- Examination to Register & Practice Medicine (ERPM)
- Training of foreign students (elective appointment)
MBBS Programme.
The University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is responsible for teaching Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal Paediatrics, to undergraduate medical students. Currently, each year approximately 150 medical students spend 4 weeks attached to the Department during the fifth year of their medical course.

BSc Nursing Degree Programme
Department is responsible;
- To carry out & supervise the training in maternal & gynecological nursing
- Assessment – MCQ,OSPE & OSCE
- Examination to Register & Practice Medicine (ERPM)
- Chairman & Secretary of panel of examiners are the members of our department, appointed by SLMC
Duties of Chairman & Secretary are;
- To formulate the MCQ paper with the panel of examiners & evaluation
- Organizing the clinical component of the examination at NHSL, CSTH, CNTH
- Training of foreign students (elective appointment)
Postgraduate
- M.Sc. Community Medicine
- Diploma in Reproductive Health
- Diploma in Family Medicine Programme
- MD part I & part II in Obettrics & Gynaecology
- Training programme for the M.sc Community medicine students at PGIM
- Conduct lectures for Diploma in Family Medicine Programmed
- Conduct lectures for MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) part I & II
- Conduct lectures and examinations for Diploma in Reproductive Health students at PGIM
Students undergoing training in Masc. Community medicine carry out 2 weeks attachment in Professorial unit where they are exposed to series of lectures, clinical demonstrations and discussions.
Staff from Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology carries out lectures in Diploma in Family Medicine Programmed conducted by PGIM
Staff from Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology carry out lectures and mock examinations for post graduate students sitting for MD part I exam and well structured clinical programmed for students sitting for MD Part II Exam.
Students undergoing training in Diploma in Reproductive Health
Services
We have one antenatal clinic & four specialized clinics weekly.
Antenatal clinic - antenatal care is given free for pregnant mothers who attend to Colombo South Teaching Hospital.
Specialized clinics – Conducted by the consultants with special interest & provide service to the community in & around Colombo South Teaching Hospital.
Sub fertility clinic – deals with the couples who have problem of fertility and couples are being referred to these clinics by other institutions & General Practioners as well
Colposcopy clinic – is conducted in order to diagnose & treat cervical, vaginal & vulval diseases. Cervical cancer screening is also another major role of this clinic.
Adolescent clinic – Adolescent friendly health services are another new development in the health system & conducted only in few hospitals in Sri Lanka & Colombo South Teaching Hospital is one of them. Our department in collaboration with department of psychiatry conducts this clinic.
Foetomaternal clinic – deals with pregnant mothers with multiple risk factors who need specialized care. Pregnant mothers with various problems are referred from other clinics, maternity homes & peripheral hospitals to this clinic.
Facilities
All the teaching activities for the final year students are conducted at Colombo South Teaching Hospital because of their clinical attachment it is easy for all the students to attend.
- Two lecture halls are available in the Colombo South Teaching Hospital where we conduct Obstetrics & Gynaecology lectures in final year each can accommodate about 150 students.
- One tutorial/Seminar room is available which can accommodate 35-40 students.
- Both the lecture hall & the tutorial room are equipped with public address systems with FM microphones, overhead projects & slide projectors.
- One room is provided with tables & chairs as a study area for students.
- There are two libraries available in the Colombo South Teaching Hospital. One common library for all the doctors in the hospital maintained by the library committee of the hospital and the other is in the ward 23, professorial unit which is equipped with text books and journals in Obstetrics & Gynaecology for undergraduates and post graduate students.
