Information Technology Laboratory
The Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura has a fully fledged state of the art Information Technology laboratory located on the ground floor of the Resource Centre Building. The main objectives in setting up of this IT laboratory are to provide skills in information technology and facilitate computer aided self learning. This would increase the chances of computer assisted learning of pre clinical, para clinical and clinical subjects with more audio visual aids which will be of benifit to the students. More importantly this will allow the students to learn at their own pace which will facilitate better learning. Visualization of models, through 3D animations would facilitate better understanding of new concepts in basic sciences as well as highlight their clinical relevance. Furthermore, versatility in use of computers will undoubtedly enhance their chances of continuous medical education and maintenance of their own or institutional data bases of patient records.
The funding of 45 computers, server, other computer equipment and networking was through a World Bank grant awarded to the Faculty of Medical Sciences under the Quality Enhancement Fund of IRQUE. Both academic and non academic staff has been trained in computer assisted teaching learning material preparation and maintenance of the computer laboratory. The laboratory has unlimited internet access facility.
Initially the students are offered a module on Information Technology during the orientation program so that all the students are familiar with the use of computers. Under the new curriculum, time has been allocated under each module for IT based learning activities so that the students can have a better understanding of the contents with the use of animations. Students would also be exposed to recent advances in each discipline through recognized websites. The Power Point presentations of the lectures, tutorial questions and practice questions will be available as well. The lab can be used to carry out literature searches through internet, preparation of presentations and any other educational activities.
