Aim
The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree programme is to provide an integrated education and training in the field of Medical Laboratory Science, to suit the needs of the relevant health, research, industrial and commercial sectors, and prepare the students for life long independent learning, career development and postgraduate study.
Overview of the course
The B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Science is a four-year course comes under the Department of Medical Education and Health Sciences of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Each academic year comprises of 3 terms and each term is 10 weeks in duration. The medium of instruction and examination in the programme will be conducted in English.
The four-year programme includes comprehensive work experience in a recognized Medical laboratory.
The MLS programme has a unitized system with each unit assessed separately at the end of a term. Each unit is equivalent to 2 weeks or 50-60 hr of teaching (lectures, tutorials and or practicals). Course consists of 40 units of study, 5 units of research, 7 units of technical skills and 20 units of work experience.
However, the lateral entrants may be exempted from certain course units in first and/ or second year depending on their work experience and qualifications which will be decided by the committee of unit coordinators.
An orientation programme consists of the foundation unit and career orientation is introduced immediately after registration of the students, which improves the communication skills in English and exposure to IT skills and university environment.
