Department of Pathology
Introduction
Pathology is the scientific study of disease processes. This includes the study of structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease, by the use of molecular, microbiological, immunological and morphological techniques. Pathology, attempts to explain the signs and symptoms manifested by patients, and provide a sound foundation for rational clinical care and therapy.
The Department of Pathology is involved mainly in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching research & diagnostic work which includes histopathology, haematology & cytopathology.
Specialized areas of diagnostic work include Gastro intestinal pathology, breast pathology, renal pathology, urological pathology, gynaecological Cytopathology pathology.Leukaemia.and anaemia

Outline of Pathology Curriculum
The subject of pathology is introduced to the students in the 5th term of the medical curriculum and continues to the 10th term.The pathology curriculum consists of 123 lectures, 60 tutorials 40 practicals during the 6 terms of pathology.The tutorials and practicals are mandatory while the lectures are optional.
During the 5th term the student is introduced to general pathology which is the preamble of anatomical pathology. General pathology consists of 25 lectures with accompanying practicals and tutorials which extends to mid 6th term.
In the 6th term systemic pathology follows general pathology. In systemic pathology, pathology of each system of the human body is taught in 55 lectures which spans up to the 10th term.
Introduction to clinical pathology begins at the 7th term and continues up to 10th term with 25 Haematology lectures & 10 Chemical Pathology lectures.
Students are exposed to the hospital laboratory for 2 weeks . During this period they have to follow and understand the laboratory procedures from the time of a specimen reaching the laboratory to the final writing of the report, issued to clinician.
Services and Facilities
Students Laboratory
Students Laboratory which can accommodate about fifty students at a time with 43 Olympus binocular microscopes an epidiascope, Closed Circuit Television and a slide projector.
Pathology Museum
Mounted pathology specimens arranged according to organ systems each specimens has a description card which provide the details of each specimen.
Seminar Room
Seminar room with facilities to conduct tutorials & small group discussions including a overhead projector and multimedia facilities.
Facilities available for post graduate students
- Teaching Microscope with facilities to teach four students at a time.
- Research microscope
- Fluorescent microscope
- Inverted tissue culture microscope
Training opportunities for postgraduate students
- Hands on experience in processing of samples
- Hands on experience in conducting INR & FNAC clinics in CSTH
- Training programmes include rotation to other specialized centers to cover the deficient areas
- Training under qualified & trained staff who are PGIM examiners
- Regular Journal Clubs & clinicopathological meetings
Departmental library
Departmental library which contains basic text books for undergraduate post graduate students.
Service in the community
Histopathology and Haematology serves to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital Professorial units anticoagulant clinic and a Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) clinic at the Teaching Hospital, Colombo South each week.
