Department of Surgery
Introduction
Welcome to the Department of Surgery. The main functions of this department involves, training of undergraduates & postgraduates students, Research activities and more importantly curative care to the public.
Undergraduate Training
The initial exposure to the subject of surgery occurs in the 3rd and 4th years of the course, with clinical training at Colombo South Teaching Hospital & Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital. Lectures are conducted at the university.
The final year Clinical Surgical Training programme and Skills development progrmme for final year undergraduates are conducted at the Colombo South Teaching hospital. This professorial training programme spans for a period of two months, for approximately 30 students.
The surgical curriculum is designed to emphasize the fundamental concepts of surgical care, to prepare medical students for internship and practice of medicine. The surgical training programme of the department of surgery aims to provide a broad exposure to surgery and relevant surgical sub specialities by creating an intellectually stimulating environment and by providing adequate facilities for clinical training in surgery.
The subspecialities covered include Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Opthalmology, Anaesthesiology, etc.
Postgraduate Training
An active postgraduate surgical training programme is conducted by our department for trainees allocated by the Board of Study - Surgery of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Sri Lanka. Presently, the department provides training for two surgical registrars and two senior registrars in General Surgery. These appointments are for a period of one year. The training programme includes

Services and Facilities
The Professorial surgical unit at Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila has an 80 bed surgical facility (40 Male and 40 female beds) and a well equipped Endoscopy and Endotherapy unit. The Endotherapy unit which has been in existence since 1997, is considered as a national referral unit for advanced therapeutic endoscopic surgery. A hospital based Clinical Skills Development centre & Laparoscopy training centre were also developed by the department.
The unit also enjoys four full day elective and emergency operating sessions in the new operating theatre Complex. Each Senior lecturer has a one full day operating list a week and this has helped to create a “hands on learning” atmosphere for postgraduate surgical trainees on open and laparoscopic surgical techniques. There are also 2 outpatient clinics, a wound clinic and an oncosurgery clinic.
